  15. The Pelicans Are Dying
  16. </hdr><body>
  17. <p>    The 3.4 million residents of Los Angeles draw 40% of their
  18. fresh water from Crowley Lake, 300 miles north of the city, and its
  19. connected waterways. Since early September, 300 white pelicans have
  20. been found dead in or near the lake. That combination of facts has
  21. alarmed Angelenos, especially since no one is sure what killed the
  22. birds.

  24. <p>    So far, examination of the carcasses has turned up no unusual
  25. concentrations of toxic substances in the pelicans. One wild theory
  26. is that fishermen may have poisoned the birds so that fewer of the
  27. lake's trout will be eaten by them. Wildlife biologists scoff at
  28. such speculation, and city water officials insist that there is
  29. nothing in the water to harm humans. But until the Great White
  30. Pelican Mystery is solved, worry and rumor, unlike the birds, seem
  31. certain to thrive.
